Background of the Study
Islamic religious teachings have a profound influence on societal norms and practices, particularly regarding gender roles and equality. In Oyo West Local Government Area, Oyo State, Islamic doctrines shape community perspectives on the rights and responsibilities of men and women. These teachings, interpreted by religious scholars and leaders, influence educational, economic, and social opportunities available to women (Babatunde, 2023). While many community members advocate for gender equality through progressive interpretations of Islamic texts, others adhere to more traditional views that may limit women’s participation in public life (Yusuf, 2024). The resulting dynamic creates a complex environment where cultural, religious, and socioeconomic factors intersect, affecting policy formulation and everyday practices. This study examines the impact of Islamic teachings on gender equality, analyzing how interpretations of scripture influence social policies and community attitudes. By integrating qualitative and quantitative research methods, the study aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the transformative potential of Islamic teachings in promoting gender equality, while also addressing the challenges posed by entrenched cultural norms (Abdul, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In Oyo West, persistent gender disparities raise concerns about the interpretation of Islamic teachings and their impact on gender equality. While some progressive voices within the community call for reform, traditional interpretations continue to restrict women’s rights and opportunities. The conflicting perspectives result in policy inconsistencies and social tensions. This study seeks to examine how Islamic teachings are used to justify gender roles and to explore ways to promote a more equitable interpretation that enhances women’s participation in all spheres of life (Babatunde, 2023; Yusuf, 2024).
